Home Remedies for Yeast Infection

Unfortunately, avoiding yeast infection seems nearly impossible as studies show that about 75% of women have experienced it before. Chances are you’ve had a yeast infection once in your life. Vaginal yeast infection or vaginal candidiasis is often caused by an overgrown fungus known as Candida albicans, which lives naturally in your vagina. They’re usually white or creamy painful discharge that triggers vaginal itching, irritation, and inflammation.

Yeasts are naturally found in the human body, but our immune system keeps them from growing out of control. Yeast infection can be caused by anything that changes bacteria and yeast’s balance within our body, like pregnancy or antibiotics.

Overgrowth of fungus can also be a result of.

  • An impaired immune system from conditions that affect your immune system such as sexually transmitted diseases
  • Taking oral contraceptives or hormone therapy
  • Uncontrolled diabetes: women with higher sugar levels are at a higher risk as sugar levels can cause yeast growth.

Some yeast infection remedies you can try at home.

There are several solutions to yeast infection; some yield results within a couple of days; others might take a week. However, remember that home remedies’ effectiveness varies and may or may not work for you.

Boric acid is a trusted and reliable treatment for yeast infections, especially for women whose infections are recurrent or chronic. Boric acid is not safe for pregnant women, so if you’re pregnant, you might want to try other remedies. It is a powerful antiseptic recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) after other antifungal medications fail to get rid of yeast infection. Women who use boric acid to remedy yeast infection may see improvement as soon as within a day. You can try pre-made boric acid suppositories to complement other medications in treating yeast infection but consult your doctor before you do that.

Tea tree oil is an essential oil from the leaves of the tea tree. It is well known for its antifungal properties and ability to kill bacteria and viruses. Remarkably it is believed to kill only the harmful bacteria while sparing the good ones that maintain balanced health in the vagina. This essential oil is potent, and it shouldn’t be used without being diluted with other oils like coconut oil. It’s advisable to apply already diluted tea tree oil to avoid any risks or skin irritation.

Probiotic Suppositories and Supplements

Probiotics help the body restore its bacteria-yeast balance. They are an effective treatment for vaginal yeast infection. Greek yogurt with bee honey is an excellent combination that can be consumed orally to increase your body’s probiotics, or you can try other oral probiotic supplements. Oral supplements sometimes take up to 10 to yield any results, so most women prefer probiotics as vaginal suppositories purchased online for quick results.

Apple cider vinegar

An apple cider vinegar bath is also a popular remedy for yeast infection, and studies have shown how reliable this remedy is in eliminating the yeast. This method is different from douching, which flushes out both good and bad bacteria from your vagina flora. When you soak yourself in an apple cider vinegar lukewarm bath for 20 minutes, it can flush out harmful microorganisms like yeast. Add half a cup of apple cider vinegar to your bathtub before soaking. Please don’t go overboard with apple cider vinegar, or it might lead to chronic yeast infection. You could try diluting and soaking in your bathtub or consider supplementing your diet with apple cider vinegar.

Avoiding yeast infection as a woman seems nearly impossible; however, to run the low risk of infection, you can take the following precautionary measures:

  • Avoid synthetic fabrics, scented detergents, or hygiene products.
  • Wear cotton underwear or sleep without one to allow your genitals to air dry
  • Avoid tight-fitting clothing, especially those made with synthetic fabrics.
  • Do not stay in a tub of water for a prolonged period.
  • Refrain from sitting around in wet or sweaty clothing.
